ERUNTgui is a free graphical user interface (GUI) designed for ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) and NTREGOPT, two legacy Windows utilities used to back up, restore, and optimize the system registry.
Originally, ERUNT relied heavily on a text-based, spartan interface and command-line switches. ERUNTgui wraps those complex commands into a simple, clickable window. Core Features
Single-Click Backups: Backs up the entire registry database instantly without requiring manual command lines.
Automation: Configures automatic registry backups at every Windows startup.
Retention Settings: Automatically deletes older backups by specifying the exact number of days to keep them.
Registry Optimization: Connects to NTREGOPT to compress and compact registry hives, which can slightly reduce system boot times.
Portable Edition: Available in a portable ZIP format that leaves no traces in your registry and runs entirely from a USB flash drive. Why People Used It Over Standard Tools
Using the built-in Windows Registry Editor (regedit) to export a .reg file does not create a true, complete backup. An exported .reg file leaves out the crucial SECURITY hive and merely merges back into the system during a restore, failing to delete corrupt keys added after the backup was made.
ERUNTgui overcomes this by saving a raw, bit-for-bit copy of the actual registry files. It bundles a mini-executable (ERDNT.exe) directly into each backup folder, allowing you to restore your registry even if Windows fails to boot into its normal desktop environment.
